Next time that you think you’re having a bad day
　　The average cost of rehabilitate one seal after the Valdez oil spill in Alaska was $80,000. At a special ceremony, two of the most expensively-saved animals were released into the wild amid cheers and applause from onlookers. A minute later, a killer whale ate them both.

　　In 1992, Frank Perkings in Los Angeles made an attempt on the world flagpole-sitting record. Suffering from the flu, he came 8 hours shorter than the 400-day record; his sponsor has gone bust, his girlfriend had left him and his phone and electricity had been cut off.

　　A woman came home to find her husband in the kitchen, shaking frantically with what looked like a wire running from his waist towards the electrical kettle. Intending to jolt him from the deadly current, she whacked him with a handy plank of wood by the back door, breaking his arm in two places. Until that moment, he had been happily listening to his walkman.

　　开头的第一句话相信大家都被慎了一下：The average cost of rehabilitate one seal after the Valdez oil spill in Alaska was $80,000. 这里面有两个比较关键和词：rehabilitate 和 seal 意为：使康复和海豹;句中的关键词如果不认识的话，试试跳过这句，看看后面的句子，能不能大概猜测一下这句话的意思呢?

　　然后有个怪怪的词：flagpole-sitting 试着拆这个词。。flag-pole-sitting能猜个八九成了吧

　　这篇文章总体上生词比较多，但结构不复杂，但里面一些词用得不错哦，比如说：Suffering from the flu，his sponsor has gone bust等等

THE LION AND THE MOUSE
　　Lion was awakened from sleep by a Mouse running over his face. Rising up in anger, he caught him and was about to kill him, when the Mouse piteously entreated, saying: "If you would only spare my life, I would be sure to repay your kindness." The Lion laughed and let him go.

　　It happened shortly after this that the Lion was caught by some hunters, who bound him by strong ropes to the ground. The Mouse, recognizing his roar, came up, and gnawed the rope with his teeth, and setting him free, exclaimed: "You ridiculed the idea of my ever being able to help you, not expecting to receive from me any repayment of your favour; but now you know that it is possible for even a Mouse to confer benefits on a Lion."

　　先来看一个词：piteously 这个词你看到的第一反应是查词典还是猜呢?pity这个词你一定认识吧，那稍稍给他穿个袜子再穿双鞋子，你就不认识啦?要有火眼金睛哦，-eous形容词的词尾，-ly副词词尾，这个词是不是就可以意为：可怜地呢?

The conceit came to me of a copious grove of singing birds, and in their midst a simple harmonic duo, two human souls, steadily asserting their own pensiveness, joyousness.

　　先来看一下结构吧，虽然是抒情文，但也有一定的结构，从开始到演奏贝多芬的曲子那个是主题句，然后是一系列曲子的感受，最后呢，加了一点自己的想象。这里呢，稍稍和考试结合一下，如果在考试中碰到这样的文章，几乎看得云里雾里，我们先抓主题句，细节可以扔在一边，如果后面的题目提到了，再到文章中去寻找相应的地方，细细看一下。

　　单词呢，大家都查了很多，苹果推荐如果有兴趣的朋友可以背诵这篇很优美的文章，从文章中体会意境，熟悉一下英语的表达方式，或者多读几遍，你也会慢慢体会这些词的用法。

　　遇到问题最多的短语：down but not out in Paris 首先，这个可不是词组，关键在于down的解释，down有一个意思为：away from an important place, esp a large city离开重要的地方(尤指大城市)，Paris 可是世界之都哦，此句意为：他们离开巴黎市中心但是未搬出巴黎。再看一个词novelty-shop，很多朋友把它解释为：新奇的商店，因为novelty有新奇、新颖之意，但它还有一个意思：(廉价的)小玩具、小饰品等，所以这个词是“玩具饰物店”的意思。第三个问题是：Later, Jacob's footprints had to be removed by art experts.可能翻出来自己也会觉得怪怪的吧，这句话要和前面那句先联系起来，Jacob often would have to walk on a floor carpeted with drawings.这里的carpet作动词解，用carpeted with drawings来形容floor,地板是铺满画纸的地板，这句话理解了，后面那句话就容易了，因为画纸上满是脚印，所以不得不请艺术专家来去除这些脚印，later意为“后来”，不是“不久”的意思哦。这篇故事虽然短小，但有不少玄机在里面吧(苹果窃笑一下。)后面那则故事没啥问题，大家都容易理解，但里面有两个专业术语可以注意一下：theory of relativity 和photoelectric effect。

An active lifestyle and a healthy, fish-rich diet are not only good for your heart, they may also help tackle the memory loss associated with old age, two leading neuroscientists said on Wednesday.
　　As people live longer, finding ways of halting the decline in mental agility is becoming increasingly important, said Professor Ian Robertson, director of the Institute of Neuroscience at Trinity College Dublin.

　　"The biggest threat to being able to function well and properly is our brains," he told journalists.

　　"There is very strong evidence, particularly in the over-50s, that the degree to which you maintain your mental faculties depends on a handful of quite simple environmental factors," he said.

　　Those who remained physically fit, avoided high stress levels and enjoyed a rich and varied social life are better equipped to stay alert as they age. Mental stimulation, learning new things and simply thinking young also help.

　　A father had a family of sons who were perpetually quarrelling among themselves. When he failed to heal their disputes by his exhortations, he determined to give them a practical illustration of the evils of disunion; and for this purpose he one day told them to bring him a bundle of sticks. When they had done so, he placed the faggot into the hands of each of them in succession, and ordered them to break it in pieces. They each tried with all their strength, and were not able to do it.

Paella: Spanish Pleasure in a Pan
　　It’s a sunny afternoon in the Mediterranean city of Valencia, Spain. Friendly Spaniards smile and wave as you stroll by. Suddenly, a rich, delicious smell fills your nostrils. Up ahead, an excited group of locals is standing around a large, round pan of food that’s cooking over a fire. “Paella”--　the word rolls off your tongue as your mouth starts to water.

　　Valencia’s paella is famous, but most Spanish provinces have their own versions of this traditional dish. Paella’s ingredients include rice, olive oil, roasted rabbit, chicken, shrimp, red and green peppers, onions, and plenty of garlic. But the key ingredient is saffron, an exotic, fragrant spice that gives paella its rich flavor and orange-yellow color.

　　The word “paella” comes from patella, which is Latin for “pan.” A paella pan is round, shallow, and flat, and has two large handles. It’s usually made of iron. To prepare an authentic paella, a good paella pan and a hot wood fire are essential.
