Barcelona is regarded as Spain’s second city, behind capital, Madrid. The city is 1)steeped in history, Barcelona was founded by the 2)Carthegeeians and according to tradition, its name is 3)derived from the great Barker family of ancient Carpage. After numerous different conquers, including the Romans and Moores that 4)ravaged the city, the Argons made Catalonia, of which Barcelona was the capital, strong and prosperous. Since the 1970s, the city has 5)reasserted its Catalon background. But it wasn’t until the summer Olympics of 1992 did Barcelona become the modern, 6)vibrant city that it still is today. And with this prosperity has come luxury and 7)fabulous hotels. The Raewon Callas the 1st was opened in 1992, by the King and Queen of Spain. It’s situated in the north of the city, near the main University and is run by Jose Louis Torres.
With buildings like the Casa Cal Bain and the Casa Minga, Antony Gaudy is credited with making the greatest impact on the image of Barcelona. He also built the fantastic Park Quell. Antony Galdy died in 1926, leaving an unfinished cathedral as his 8)epitaph.
What are the attractions of coming to Barcelona?
There are many, many different attractions: culture, leisure, monuments, our architecture, and the 9)gastronomy. Barcelona has commercial areas, shopping areas of five kilometers that goes around to the sea to the north, and on the street and continue at shop at the same time that you find the shops. You see our architecture, you see our monuments, our museums, and also our restaurants. So there is a mix between shopping and services.
One label that’s hot among the fashion conscious is Miro, and these trendy designs of clothing and shoes originate in Barcelona. The region itself now produces for other international labels, like for the 10)Gallic giant Lacose.
No visit to the city would be complete without a tour of the Nou Camp, the immense home of one of Spain’s finest teams, Barcelona Football Club. FC Barcelona was founded in 1899 along with the other Spanish team, Real Madrid. It’s one of the greatest football teams in Europe. With players like Maradona and Ronaldo having played for Barca, it’s easy to explain their success! FC Barcelona is credited to winning more 11)trophies than any other team in European football history. The stadium, the Nou Camp, can hold one hundred and twelve thousand people, making it one of the greatest places to watch and play “the beautiful game”

疯狂英语阅读：JudiDench

Five years ago most Americans had never heard of Judi Dench. But then, in 1997, she landed her first starring role in a movie. She played Queen Victoria in the film, Mrs. Brown. Then, a year later, she played Queen Elizabeth in Shakespeare in Love and audiences around the world sat up and took notice. In the last five years, she has won an Oscar, two 1)Golden Globes, and a 2)Tony. And she’s accomplished all this when she least expected it, at the age of 67.
Dench was only on screen for eight minutes in Shakespeare in Love, but that eight minutes won her first Academy Award. Eleven weeks later, she was on the red carpet again. This time, winning a Tony Award for “Best Actress”for her performance in the 3)Broadway play Amy’s View.
Interviewer: Is it 4)gratifying to make that kind of step, that kind of achievement, when you’re not in your 20’s and 30’s?
Dench: When you’re so old, you mean? Yes, well it’s extraordinary.
Interviewer: So, it’s never too late?
Dench: No, never too late for anything.
And despite the success in movies, she’s still most comfortable on the stage, in front of an audience.
Dench (points at the edge of the stage): From here, it’s all ours, and from there, it’s all yours. But we have to kind of 5)woo you in, to understand what this extraordinary base is like. They’e done you the service of coming to the theatre and buying the ticket. What you have to do is to give them something and 6)bait them.
Dench’s career has been anything but downhill. She made her first appearance on stage at nine, in local theatre with her brother and father; a doctor and 7)amateur actor. She went onto join the Royal Shakespeare Company, where she played many classical roles, including Othellia and Juliet, and performed opposite many of the leading men in British theatre. But all of that disappears when she becomes the character on screen, as here, in 8)Iris.(Lines from Iris: I’m trying to help you!)
Interviewer: You revealed the character often with just a look, the face, the eyes; sometimes without saying a word.
Dench: It’s not what you say, it’s what goes on between the lines. It’s the thoughts and on film, well on one degree, if you get the thoughts in the right order and up front there, the camera will pick up on it.

(Movie Toy Story: To infinity and beyond!)
Oh, to be free as a bird. It’s been the 1)stuff of fantasy, and of reality. Sort of. 2)A self-contained flying man. This jet pack from the 1960s had barely enough fuel to fly 30 seconds. So the dream 3)languished for decades. Everyone agreed it was completely impractical, except Michael Moshier.
Michael Moshier: The pilot controls the 4)flaps with the right-hand 5)control stick.
Moshier, a former Navy-pilot-turned-entrepreneur, has spent the last 5 years of his life working in secret designing a tiny twin 6)blade strap on helicopter called The Solotrek.
He said he finally made his first cautious test flight only two feet up at first. But to Moshier, two feet up was like being in heaven.
Michael Moshier: It was 7)exhilarating beyond description. I will tell you that I didn’t sleep that night or for several nights thereafter. It was just a monumental experience.
With a little more work, he says, the machine will 8)zip around the treetops at 80mph, stabilized by computers. He can picture the army using it to get over 9)rugged 10)terrain, police on search and rescue missions, and if an occasional daredevil wants to beat traffic, well, Moshier believes a pilot who can walk and chew gum with minimal training should be able to get on the aircraft and fly it safely and suitably. There’s just this one 11)nagging question, the machine will fly, but will the idea? True, Moshier has help from the Defense Department and from NASA, but won’t the machine be noisy or dangerous or hard to park?
Jeffrey Schroeder(NASA scientist): I think we can do it but it would be expensive. The challenge is to make it so that it has more of a mass appeal.
Perhaps we are only destined to dream of only flying without wings and never do it. On the other hand, Michael Moshier was two feet up.
12) Supersonic Jet
A test launch of what Japanese scientists hope will be the next generation of supersonic jet has failed spectacularly, 13)spiraling in the sky and crashing onto the Australian desert. The super jet was a 14)scale model of the plane that would be able to fly as fast as the Concord, with twice the range and triple the capacity. But it 15)dodged back to earth shortly after takeoff. Scientists sponsored by Japan’s government funded national aerospace laboratory, spent the last 6 months preparing to test it. Despite the crash they said, they would continue to work on the project and plan another test.

超音速飞机

Most parents who want to send their kids to camp in the summertime have to pay hundreds, even thousands of dollars. If your kid happens to be a really good basketball player, you probably won’t have to pay a 1)dime. Your kid will go to camp, basketball camp, 2)courtesy of Nike or Adidas. Those shoe companies 3)scour the country for the best basketball talent and compete like crazy to get those kids into their brand, offering free shoes, free trips, free camps to even younger players.
Interviewer: How old were you when they started 4)singling you out? Were you just a little kid?
Tyson Chandler: It was about 5th grade, 6th grade.
When we first met him in 1997, Tyson Chandler had just finished the 8th grade. But he and his teammates on the southern California all stars were already sponsored and equipped by Nike.
Interviewer: You’te all wearing Nike.Chandler: Yeah.
Interviewer: You have Nike on, too.
Chandler: Yeah.
Interviewer: You’re Nikemen.
Chandler: All Nike.Nike and Adidas have turned summertime into a huge basketball 5)bazaar, spending millions of dollars to 6)coral every kid with a decent jump shot. Betting that one or two of them will develop into superstars and human 7)billboards. As soon as kids are finished with their junior high or high school seasons in the spring, coaches armed with free shoes are weighing to recruit them from Nike summer teams or Adidas summer teams that will play all the way through August. Both Nike and Adidas have sponsored youth tournaments in Las Vegas. Hundreds of kids as young as 12 showing their skills on the court, and 8)strutting their stuff on the 9)strip. At an age when the only mail most kids get is birthday party invitations, Tyson got 10)recruitment letters from 11)UCLA and Arizona and Syracuse. They wanted him for later, Nike already had him. Both companies also have their 12)hooks in high school basketball teams, all around the country. There are more than a hundred Nike high schools and a hundred Adidas high schools. They get free shoes, free uniforms and free equipment and often cash for the coach. In return Nike and Adidas get exposure, loyalty and a pipeline for promising players. More and more, the best teenage players are turning 13)pro right from high school.
Tyson’s mother is worried that things are moving to fast for her son.
Interviewer: Do you worry sometimes about what this is doing to your kid?
Mother: Yes, I do, I worry ‘cause I don’t want him to move too fast, I still want him to be a kid.
Interviewer: He is a kid.
Mother: Yeah, but a lot of people 14)overlook that because of his height.
